The Python Script Advanced sensor executes a Python script on the computer running the local or remote probe. PRTG Manual: Python Script Advanced Sensor When the bolt gets close to the ground, it creates an intense electric field, which causes upward streamers that meet it midair. When lightning first develops, it generally sends a bolt called a step leader down toward the ground, branching in seemingly random directions. But most of it happens too fast for the human eye to glimpse, so researchers use high-speed cameras to spy how the lightning races between sky and Earth. There is no more iconic storm image than the brilliant white forks of lightning snaking their way across a menacing sky. (Image credit: Doug Jordan and Martin Uman/International Center for Lightning Research and Testing) Bright white strokes of lightning off to the side were displaced by wind blowing between strokes. The blue-green light in the image is from copper in the initial triggering wire being heated to the point of radiating light. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and NASA are building a geostationary lightning mapper, or GLM, to fly aboard the GOES-R satellite set to launch in 2015.Ī triggered lightning experiment conducted in Florida as part of an ongoing research effort to better understand how lightning forms. The satellite makes a lap around the planet every 90 minutes, giving scientists a picture of the amount and distribution of lightning worldwide. The University of Alabama scientists have also developed a satellite-based sensor that counts photons from low-Earth orbit. ![]() These sensors give scientists a pretty good view of lightning on the ground, but to get a global view, why not observe it from space? "It's literally a salad bowl - we got it from Target," Bitzer said. They protect the sensor from rain using an inverted metal dish. īitzer and his colleagues at the University of Alabama in Huntsville have developed a sensor that operates in the LF/VLF range and measures the change in electric field from a lightning discharge and converts it into a voltage. VLF arrays can detect lightning over land and oceans, where hurricanes and other storms develop. These operate in the 5-to-30 kilohertz range, and are spaced thousands of kilometers apart. The National Lightning Detection Network (NLDN), a network of more than 100 low-frequency sensing stations around the United States, is widely used by researchers and provides vital monitoring for predicting severe weather.Īt the broadest scale, very low frequency (VLF) arrays measure electromagnetic signals not just along the Earth's surface, but between the Earth and the ionosphere, the upper layer of the atmosphere that is electrically charged by solar radiation. These arrays operate in the range of hundreds of kilohertz to a few megahertz. Lightning also produces energy in the form of light, heat and atomic energy such as X-rays and gamma rays. These provide information about the energy released, in the form of electrical current in channels to ground. VHF sensors operate in the range of 10 to 100 megahertz and are spaced close togetherAbout a dozen VHF arrays exist nationwide, including at the University of Alabama in Huntsville, New Mexico Tech, and the Kennedy Space Center in Florida.īy contrast, low frequency (LF) arrays image larger-scale lightning activity, such as the long channels of electricity in cloud-to-ground and intra-cloud flashes. ![]() Very high frequency (VHF) arrays, collections of sensors that measure electromagnetic radiation, capture images of the fine branching structures of a lightning strike. "The higher the frequency you go to, the smaller the object you get to image," Cummins said. Three different systems capture lightning discharges over a range of different frequencies, which correspond to the energies being produced. One of the most critical are lightning mapping arrays, which are networks of electromagnetic sensors that home in on the fiery flashes and measure the energy they release. ![]() Lightning-sensing systems have been evolving since the time radios were developed around the turn of the 20 th century, Cummins said. "We've gotten pretty good at being able to quantify the number of cloud-to-ground discharges in a region, and we're getting better at quantifying the number and nature of intra-cloud discharges," Cummins told LiveScience. While lightning that strikes the ground poses the most direct threat to humans and infrastructure, lightning between or within clouds can provide warning of dangerous hail and tornadoes, said Kenneth Cummins, an atmospheric scientist at the University of Arizona, in Tucson. ![]() The wrath of Zeus takes two forms: cloud-to-ground lightning and intra-cloud lightning. Lightning strikes more than 250,000 people each year worldwide. ![]() Here in his first acting role Ambrose (Jonathan Good as he’s referred to on IMDB) does tone down his wrestling persona for the role of Shaw here but still carries that level of intensity in a few scenes, making him unpredictable. ![]() Ambrose was my main reason for checking this out due to his character work in wrestling, particularly from the talking side of it, he carried a certain level of intensity and charisma. As with the case with the previous 12 Rounds flicks, we have a WWE Superstar at the front and centre of the whole show – this one being Dean Ambrose. The story concept however is very much similar vein of it being Die Hard but everyone’s a cop, just one good one taking on a corrupt squad and the film where’s the ‘B-Movie’ status proudly on its sleeve for being somewhat a generic play by play action set pieces with some utter moment of brilliance smarts in part of Shaw’s escapes from being cornered and taken out, to the point of Shaw also giving the viewers a heads up of the number of bullets he has remaining, incase you weren’t keeping count. Should be noted from the start that I haven’t watched the previous 12 Rounds films (first starred John Cena and the second starred Randy Orton) so unlike some people that have seen the film, I wasn’t as disappointed as they were that they changed the format up a bit here on the 12 rounds side in the film, which the first two focused on a villain put his foe through the ringer in a 12 round series of challenges and this time in the Lockdown instalment, it’s literally the amount of ammo left in Shaw’s gun. Against his fellow officers, Shaw must take them on with just him, his smarts and the twelve rounds in his gun. At the precinct he comes across evidence which links his fellow officers, including former partner Detective Burke, into the death of a local drug dealer and corruption, Burke and his men trap Shaw in the precinct and plan to kill him and destroy the evidence. Lockdown, the next instalment in WWE’s 12 Rounds series has us following Detective John Shaw, who returns to active duty after the death of his partner. He quickly finds himself trapped inside his own precinct, hunted and in search of the truth, as the crooked cops stop at nothing to recover the evidence. STARRING: Dean Ambrose, Roger Cross, Daniel Cudmore, Lochlyn Munro, Ty Olsson, Sarah Smyth, Rebecca Marshall and Matthew HarrisonĪ police officer who returns to duty after recovering from a gun shot wound to discover incriminating evidence of illegal activities against those closest to him. ![]() Too often I-not the salesperson-was the one to explain to the customer that their watch needed light to keep the storage capacitor charged. The customer is keeping the watch in a place where it won’t remain charged, the customer will be back with the same problem even after the replacement of the capacitor if you don’t explain how to care for these watches. In our experience, seven out of 10 need only the storage capacitor charged.ĭo yourself and your customers a favor and try recharging the capacitor before going through the process of sending the watch to your watchmaker. If after 10 minutes it is still tripping, the watch will in fact need the storage capacitor replaced. Often, we receive these types of watches for repair with the instruction for a new storage capacitor. ![]() What is meant by “trip” is that the second hand will skip two seconds for every second it ticks. With that said, you can see why a jewelry box or underwear drawer is not the optimum place to keep this type of watch.Įco-Drive/solar watches, on the other hand, generate power from ambient light in order to recharge their storage capacitors.Īll solar, Kinetic and Eco-Drive watches have a symptom that lets you know when the storage capacitor needs to be charged-the second hand begins to trip. Replacing a storage capacitor is much more costly than replacing a simple watch battery. ![]() Like all rechargeable batteries, if we run the battery down too often and do not fully charge the storage capacitor it will fail prematurely. Storage capacitors act like a battery however, they can be recharged. Regular watch batteries cannot be recharged. In a Kinetic watch, the motion charges the storage capacitor. In an automatic watch, this motion winds the mainspring. Kinetic watches act like automatic watches in that it is the motion of the arm while wearing the watch that powers the watch. This is evidenced by their telling you that the watch was running when they put in the jewelry box or in their underwear drawer. It seems to me that the end user customers have no idea how their watch generates power. I know for some of you the headline of this story might seem weird but having repaired Citizen Eco-Drive and Seiko Kinetic watches for a long time now, I can tell you that there are things that need to be covered. |
